CTG sponsors Laser Virtual Sailing Championships

Mon 3rd, Sep 2001

Following the (literally) show stopping success of the Laser sailing simulator at the London boat show earlier this year, The Laser Centre with the support of Crompton Technology Group and other leading sailing industry suppliers, are organising a National Sailing Simulator Championships. Qualifying rounds will take place between September and December with the finals to be held courtesy of National Boatshows as a main feature during the January 2002 London International Boat Show.

Qualifying rounds will be held at sailing clubs and other suitable venues around the UK. Entry is open to all comers, the simulator programme will equalise differences in sailor sizes. Racing will be on a short 3 to 4 minute course that includes windward and leeward legs and short reaches. Qualification for the 256 places for the elimination rounds and finals to be held at the Boat Show will be by fastest time around the course. The elimination rounds at the show to find the final 16 will again be against the clock. The finals held on the last Sunday of the show will be one-on-one in two simulators with sudden death elimination.

For those having already experienced the simulator first hand, the appeal of the competition will be obvious. It is immediate, hands on and great participation for those watching who can see every gain and loss around the virtual course as it is happening. It is also an intellectual and physical challenge requiring extreme concentration with all the ingredients of the real thing except water. To get to the finals will require skill and application and it is expected that amongst those to feature will be our top UK single handed sailors. However, take no bets! The bench mark time that Laser gold medallist Ben Ainslie (pictured) set for the last show was substantially beaten two weeks later in Holland by a 15 year old Laser Radial sailor!

CTG has long been associated with competition dinghy racing and is delighted to support this truly exciting and innovative competition.
