CTG Develops High Torque Composite Transmission Shafts for Rail

Fri 11th, Sep 2009

CTG has successfully developed a composite transmission shaft for a locomotive designed and built by Skoda Transportation a.s. This locomotive manufactured in the Czech Republic, is called the Locomotive 109E and is intended for priority trains where the locomotive's power, speed and interoperability can be fully applied. Its design and livery were created in collaboration with the famous Porsche Design studio.

The CTG glass fibre composite shaft developed for this application is 1.2m long, 260mm diameter and saves up to 75% mass of an equivalent steel shaft, its purpose is to transmit torque between diesel electric motors and the rest of the driveline located in two separate driven bogies. Each shaft must be capable of transmitting up to 100,000Nm peak torque for the life of the locomotive.

During homologation testing, it has been demonstrated that this shaft design has a significant safety factor, transmitting up to 270,000Nm before failure and this is even after the equivalent of running on the locomotive for 40 years!
